Firefighter (Basic Life Support/HAZMAT Technician)

This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date.Click here for more information on SRC for Firefighters (Primary/Rigorous) You will serve as a member of a firefighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property, responding to alarms and combating fire involving structures, equipment, facilities, crashed and burning aircraft, fuel, chemicals, and brush fires. You will fight fires using turrets and large crash fire rescue firefighting apparatus. You will serve as a Hazardous Material Technician on the installation Hazardous Materials Response Team and respond to the presence or potential releases of hazardous materials both chemical and biological to stop or control the release. Train in preparation for hazardous materials and weapons of mass destruction incident response and procedures; and perform hazard and risk assessment to conduct an incident analysis. You will prepare incident reports and documentation; maintain and decontaminate hazmat equipment and supplies. You will initiate established medical protocols in providing basic life support and perform noninvasive emergency procedures. GS-04 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Following detailed instructions to assist with basic firefighter duties, such as using and/or maintaining basic firefighter equipment and 2) administering basic first aid to injured victims. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03). OR Education: Two years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or other related fields of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages. GS-05 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Utilizing and maintaining firefighting equipment; 2) Applying basic first aid; AND 3) Participating in firefighting and rescue situations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; GS-06 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Performing standard firefighting techniques; 2) Responding to basic hazardous materials incidents; AND 3) Performing basic emergency medical care. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). GS-07 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Operating firefighting equipment such as pumps, foam generators, boom and ground sweep nozzles, and other similar equipment; 2) Operating firefighting vehicles to keep fire in optimum range while ensuring that backflash will not occur; and 3) Completing initial incident analysis by identifying materials involved, determining whether hazardous materials have been released, and evaluating the surrounding conditions. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
