Director - Corporate Engagement, Marketing Strategy & Planning
TIAA
Reporting to the Global Head of Marketing Strategy & Planning, the Director of Corporate Engagement serves as a critical connector between the Marketing & Communications organization and some of the enterprise's most consequential strategic and governance processes. This individual will help manage corporate engagement across Executive Committee and Board-level forums, leads the development and oversight of risk and control programs as Marketing & Communications' primary first line of defense owner, and serves as a strategic partner and integrator across Legal, Compliance, Corporate Strategy, Finance, and Human Resources. The Director brings a structured, consulting-oriented mindset to complex, ambiguous challenges — forming sophisticated hypotheses, designing and executing rigorous analyses, and translating conclusions into clear recommendations and executive-ready communications. Key Responsibilities and Duties Corporate Engagement & Executive Narrative In partnership with the Chief Administration Office, Office of the Corporate Secretary, Human Resources, Finance, and Marketing & Communications leaders, develop and manage executive-level presentations and materials for Board updates, quarterly operating reviews, and ad hoc Executive Committee requests. This role carries direct accountability for the quality, coherence, and strategic framing of all materials flowing from Marketing & Communications into the enterprise's highest-stakes forums. A central and differentiating responsibility of this role is the ability to construct and manage a consistent executive narrative — one that connects Marketing & Communications' strategy, investments, performance, and risk posture into a single, coherent story for senior leadership. This requires not only strong writing and visual design judgment, but the ability to think several steps ahead: being deeply embedded in the strategy, anticipating executive questions, identifying narrative gaps before they surface, sequencing information to build understanding and confidence, and calibrating the level of detail and tone appropriate for each audience. The Director must be equally skilled at developing the underlying analytical substance and translating it into communications that are clear, compelling, and boardroom-ready. Risk & Control Program Ownership Serve as Marketing & Communications' first line of defense (1LOD) owner for operational risk and control programs, working in close partnership with the second line of defense (2LOD) — including Enterprise Risk Management and Compliance — to ensure Marketing & Communications meets its enterprise risk obligations with rigor and consistency. Own the development, implementation, and ongoing management of Marketing & Communications' risk and control framework, including operational risk identification and assessment, control design and documentation, control testing, issue management, and risk remediation tracking and reporting. Actively collaborate with other 1LOD owners across the Marketing & Communications organization to ensure program consistency, shared accountability, and effective escalation of emerging risks. Maintain a productive, trust-based working relationship with 2LOD partners, representing Marketing & Communications credibly in risk forums, regulatory reviews, and governance processes. Translate complex risk and compliance requirements into practical guidance and clear action plans for Marketing & Communications leadership and business teams. Ensure risk reporting delivered upward — including to the Executive Committee and Board where relevant — reflects an accurate, well-framed picture of the organization's risk posture. Educational Requirements University (Degree) Preferred Work Experience 5+ Years Required; 7+ Years Preferred Physical Requirements Physical Requirements: Sedentary Work Career Level 8IC Preferred Qualifications 3+ years of post-MBA experience (or 5+ years without an MBA) in corporate strategy, management consulting, business management or a strategy-adjacent role within a complex enterprise environment. Experience working in financial services, with familiarity of the regulatory and risk governance landscape relevant to marketing, communications, and enterprise operations. Demonstrated experience managing first line of defense risk and control programs — including operational risk identification, control design and testing, issue tracking and remediation, and risk reporting — with direct exposure to partnering with second line functions such as Enterprise Risk Management and Compliance. Experience working alongside or within cross-functional 1LOD communities, with the ability to drive consistency, alignment, and shared accountability across distributed risk owners. Experience partnering directly with Legal, Compliance, and/or Corporate Strategy on enterprise governance processes, regulatory inquiries, strategic planning cycles, or cross-functional risk reviews. Exceptional narrative planning and executive communication skills — including the ability to construct a through-line story across complex, multi-workstream content, sequence and frame information for maximum clarity and impact, and anticipate how executive and Board-level audiences will receive and interpret materials. This is not a role for strong writers alone; it requires strategic thinkers who can architect a story from the ground up and manage it through multiple iterations under time pressure. Proven ability to develop structured, logical, and visually compelling presentations for senior executives and Board-level audiences, with a high bar for design quality, logical flow, and audience-appropriate calibration of detail and tone. Experience leveraging multiple media types — including PowerPoint, video, and experiential formats — to communicate strategy and performance to executive and external audiences. Strong qualitative and quantitative analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to synthesize complex, multi-source information into clear and actionable conclusions. High degree of comfort operating nimbly in fast-moving, unstructured environments — acting with urgency, managing shifting priorities, and bringing order to ambiguity. High endurance and flexibility to work through multiple iterations and evolving subject matter without loss of quality or rigor. Collaborative, collegial team orientation with the ability to effectively manage and influence relationships with executives, cross-functional teams, and complex enterprise processes. Ability to coach, supervise, and lead junior staff through formal and informal reporting lines.
