THE OPPORTUNITY AQMed is developing a next-generation, non-invasive cardiac diagnostic platform designed to revolutionize how heart health is assessed. The team operates at the intersection of regulated medical device development and fast-paced startup innovation, with a strong emphasis on quality, scientific rigor, and patient safety. We are seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer to serve as the Technical Lead for our medical device software platform. In this role, you will own the software architecture that powers our device — from our fleet of devices in the field running Linux, to the cloud. Your architectural decisions will keep the platform safe, maintainable, and extensible as our product evolves. You will be raising engineering standards and architecture quality, serving as the final technical authority for our regulated medical product. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES System Architecture & Technical Strategy • Own the Platform Architecture: Own technical integrity and cross-subsystem architecture for the end-to-end software stack. Establish and expand as needed a cloud data platform in a regulated environment, which stores data from in-field Linux-based cardiac scanning medical devices, parses the patient and device data, and serves ML pipelines on AWS infrastructure for downstream clinical software products.. • Product-Ready Foundation: Design clear and flexible interfaces such that our platform can evolve with our product roadmap without major refactors. • Data Path Integrity: Design and maintain a HIPAA-compliant, production-grade data platform that ensures data confidentiality, integrity, and availability from the sensor to the cloud. Execution & Quality Leadership • Hands-on Engineering: This is a player-coach role. You will spend meaningful time writing code, reviewing complex PRs, and owning software correctness across interfaces from device to cloud to customer. You lead by doing, setting the standard for code quality and testing. You know what “good” looks like. • Technical Mentorship: Mentor a growing team of senior and staff engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, rigorous review, and psychological safety. • Drive Quality & Compliance: Lead the engineering team’s adherence to our quality system, including applicable medical device standards and regulations. You are the gatekeeper ensuring that design outputs (code) meet design inputs (requirements) and that our "move fast" culture never compromises patient safety and critical product functions. Scale strong engineering practices across the team, including design reviews, code review quality, test strategy and technical documentation Cross-Functional Collaboration • Cross-functional execution: Partner with Product, Clinical and Regulatory stakeholders to translate product requirements, clinical performance goals, and regulatory inputs into concrete, actionable technical plans, engineering specifications and development timelines. ESSENTIAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE • 7+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 4 years serving as a Technical Lead or Architect for complex, distributed, and cloud-heavy systems. • Regulated Industry Experience: Proven experience delivering regulated software in a quality-management system, through the full product lifecycle. In addition to core med-tech, relevant industries include aerospace, automotive, and life sciences. • Expertise at data interfaces: Proven experience aligning technical requirements and code development across data interfaces / across different SW components. • Modern Code Framework Mastery: Mastery in at least one modern systems language: Rust, C++, Go, or Python. • Expertise in cloud (AWS preferred): Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), containerization (Docker/Kubernetes) and observability (Cloudwatch/Datadog). HIGHLY DESIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE • Security & Data Privacy: Experience designing HIPAA/GDPR-compliant systems, including encryption, audit logging, and secure data transmission. • Medical Device Experience: Proven experience delivering regulated medtech software (IEC 62304 Class B/C) through the full product lifecycle. • Product-Aware Mindset: Demonstrated ability to make architectural trade-offs that favor long-term product flexibility and user experience. You can give examples of how you designed a system to accommodate future business needs that weren't yet fully defined. • SaMD Commercialization: Experience with "Software as a Medical Device" (SaMD) products that have successfully scaled in the market. • EHR/EMR Integration: Hands-on experience integrating software with hospital IT systems (Epic, Cerner) using standards like HL7 or FHIR. • Cybersecurity Expertise: Background in PKI, device authentication, or threat modeling for connected devices. • Cardiology Domain Knowledge: Familiarity with cardiac diagnostics, ECG workflows, or similar physiological monitoring platforms.
