About the Position: Incumbent is assigned to a diesel/electric powered, self-propelled Class I pipeline dredge. Incumbent will be assigned to the Engine Room and stands a regular watch with the shift engineer and electrician. NOTE: This position is a Permanent, Full-Time Seasonal Appointment. Conduct gauge and/or thermometer readings of machinery and prepares shift logs reflecting oil pressures and oil and water temperatures. Make minor and routine repairs to engine room diesel operating machinery and equipment. Remove excess grease and oil from machinery and deck. Fit grease gun heads over grease fitting and injects grease by hand pump. Utilize various measuring instruments, including ammeters, calipers, dial indicators, micrometers, rules, etc. Operate water treatment equipment to produce potable water for drinking, cooking, laundering, and/or sanitation needs. Inspect purifiers, pumps, air compressors, steering apparatus, generators, water purification systems, marine sewage disposal unit, fuel tank levels, etc. Who May Apply: Only applicants who meet one of the employment authority categories below are eligible to apply for this job. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Striker Diesel-Electric without more than normal supervision. I am skilled in regularly scheduled and special observations of pressure and temperature gauges and alarms associated with machinery; preparing shift logs reflecting oil pressures and oil and water temperatures; listening for sounds that indicate abnormal operating conditions to ensure proper functioning of equipment; utilizing various hand tools and measuring instruments, including ammeters, calipers, dial indicators, micrometers, rules, etc; understanding technical manuals pertinent to the equipment and machinery operations. • Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Screen Out Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Maintenance of Marine Equipment Use of Measuring Instruments Physical Effort: Considerable physical and mental concentration is required during both machinery operation and lubrication. The work requires continuous standing on the metal decks of the engine rooms and frequent bending and stooping. Work may require moderately heavy lifting and physical effort in moving 120 pounds drums of grease and 55 gallon drums of oil used daily. Working Conditions: Works inside and outside in weather that is occasionally disagreeable. Dirt and grease are frequently disagreeable caused by working on equipment in marine hulls. Noise is frequently and intensely disagreeable, caused by working in and around engines, generators, gears, and large electric motors located in holds of floating plant. Fumes and smoke are frequently unpleasant and the wearing of a helmet is occasionally unpleasant. Incumbent is constantly exposed to the possibility of electrocution, cuts, bruises, strains, sprains, crankcase explosions, and drowning. Incumbent is required to observe safety precaution and work in a safe manner to prevent injury to self and others and to prevent property damage.
