# Staff Full Stack Engineer (Backend focused)

Company description FlyBox is building the platform for on-demand storage: customers buy boxes, pack them, and we pick up, store, and return their things whenever they need them. Engineering owns the customer iOS and Android apps, the GraphQL API behind them, warehouse and operations tools, billing, and the cloud that runs it all. We're building a small, senior, in-house team in North Carolina that uses an AI-native engineering workflow, with agents built into how we design, test, and ship. Role description We're hiring a Staff Full-Stack Engineer whose main focus is the backend. You will report to the CTO and own the GraphQL API and domain services behind our apps and internal admin: customers, boxes, orders, subscriptions, billing, and warehouse operations. You'll also work across the stack, shipping web admin features and making changes in our iOS and Android apps when a feature needs them. This is Staff-level ownership of a production money path, not a ticket queue. What you'll do: Design, build, and operate our TypeScript GraphQL and REST APIs, including schema design, resolvers, and access control Own persistence in PostgreSQL and Sequelize: models, migrations, performance, and transactional integrity for orders and billing Build background processing: BullMQ job queues, scheduled work, webhooks, and an outbox pattern for side effects Integrate and harden third-party systems for payments, tax, address validation, auth, and shipping Ship features in our Next.js admin app when operations needs them Carry features into the mobile apps when needed: update GraphQL queries, screens, and flows in our native iOS (Swift) and Android (Kotlin/Compose) apps, partnering with our mobile engineers Use AI coding agents and tools every day to design, write, test, and review code, and help shape how our team uses them Raise the quality bar through tests (unit, integration, Testcontainers), code review, and production debugging Location : Remote within North Carolina (Raleigh or Charlotte preferred), with occasional in-person working sessions in Raleigh. Candidates must live in North Carolina. Must be authorized to work in the US. We are unable to sponsor visas now or in the future. Qualifications 8+ years building production software, most of it backend, including Staff-level ownership of a substantial domain Expert TypeScript/Node.js, with production GraphQL (Apollo or equivalent) and REST/webhooks PostgreSQL and an ORM (Sequelize or similar) used seriously in production, including migrations and query performance Job queues and async processing (BullMQ, Sidekiq, or equivalent) You've owned checkout, billing, subscriptions, or similarly unforgiving money flows: idempotency, retries, webhook reconciliation Comfortable shipping React/Next.js features end to end Comfortable working in a native mobile codebase (Swift or Kotlin) with AI tools. You don't need to be a mobile specialist, but a mobile change shouldn't be a blocker for you. Daily hands-on use of AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or similar), with a view on where they help and where they need guardrails Strong testing habits, and the judgment to fix a messy module without rewriting it Nice to have: Braintree, Avalara, Auth0, Zod, Sentry/pino, hexagonal or vertical-slice architecture, or logistics/subscription experience BS in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience Stack: Node.js 24, TypeScript, Express 5, Apollo Server 5
