Hotel Maintenance Engineer Position Purpose The Hotel Maintenance Engineer is responsible for helping maintain the overall condition, functionality, safety, and appearance of the hotel. This hands-on position performs preventive maintenance and general repairs throughout guestrooms, public areas, back-of-house spaces, grounds, and building systems. Responsibilities may include basic plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, painting, drywall, furniture repair, equipment maintenance, and other general building repairs. Respond promptly to maintenance work orders, guest requests, and departmental maintenance needs. Inspect guestrooms, public areas, equipment, and building systems to identify needed repairs or maintenance. Troubleshoot and perform basic repairs involving plumbing, electrical, HVAC, mechanical systems, carpentry, drywall, painting, caulking, grouting, and other building components. Repair or replace items such as light bulbs, fixtures, switches, outlets, faucets, toilets, hardware, filters, furniture, wall coverings, and other hotel equipment or furnishings. Complete guestroom preventive maintenance according to established schedules and procedures. Assist with preventive maintenance on building systems, equipment, and public areas. Perform routine inspections to identify maintenance or safety concerns before they become larger issues. Complete maintenance work in a manner that minimizes disruption to guests and hotel operations. Maintain accurate records of completed repairs, preventive maintenance, inspections, and items requiring additional attention. Promptly report major repairs, equipment failures, safety concerns, or issues requiring specialized service to the appropriate supervisor. Communicate room maintenance concerns that may affect room availability to Front Office, Housekeeping, and hotel leadership as appropriate. Assist with placing guestrooms or equipment out of service when necessary and follow up on repairs. Maintain hotel grounds and exterior areas as assigned. Maintain maintenance shops, mechanical rooms, storage areas, tools, and equipment in a clean, safe, and organized condition. Maintain appropriate levels of maintenance supplies and communicate inventory needs to management. Properly store, label, and handle maintenance materials and chemicals. Safely operate hand tools, power tools, ladders, and other maintenance equipment. Follow manufacturer instructions and established procedures when operating or repairing equipment. Follow all hotel safety, security, emergency, and maintenance procedures. Guest Service Responsibilities Respond to guest maintenance requests promptly, professionally, and courteously. Communicate with guests regarding maintenance concerns in a friendly and respectful manner. Protect guest privacy and security when entering occupied guestrooms. Maintain a professional appearance and minimize noise, debris, and disruption when completing repairs in guest areas. Communicate unresolved maintenance concerns to the appropriate department or manager to ensure proper follow-up. Work collaboratively with Housekeeping, Front Office, and other hotel departments to support a positive guest experience. Safety & Compliance Follow established workplace safety procedures and applicable OSHA requirements. Use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when performing tasks that may present a safety risk. Properly use, maintain, and store tools, equipment, chemicals, and maintenance materials. Review and follow applicable Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information when working with chemicals or hazardous materials. Immediately report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, workplace injuries, or other safety concerns. Follow applicable procedures for electrical, mechanical, chemical, ladder, and equipment safety. Maintain work areas in a manner that reduces hazards to guests and team members. Follow applicable company policies, hotel or brand standards, building requirements, and regulatory requirements. Supportive Functions In addition to performing the essential functions, this position may be required to perform other duties based on the operational needs of the hotel. Assist with renovation, improvement, and special maintenance projects. Assist outside vendors and contractors with access to hotel equipment and work areas as directed. Assist with receiving, organizing, and stocking maintenance supplies and equipment. Assist with snow removal, grounds maintenance, weather preparation, or other exterior responsibilities when applicable to the property. Assist other hotel departments with maintenance-related needs. Participate in required meetings, inspections, and training. Respond to hotel emergencies involving building systems, utilities, equipment, or maintenance concerns as assigned. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications Previous hotel, apartment, commercial building, facilities, or general maintenance experience preferred. Basic working knowledge of general building maintenance and repair. Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, mechanical, carpentry, painting, and general repair practices preferred. Mechanical aptitude and strong troubleshooting skills. Working knowledge of common hand and power tools. Ability to understand and follow equipment manuals, maintenance instructions, safety information, and work orders. Strong attention to detail and ability to identify maintenance and safety concerns. Ability to prioritize work orders and manage multiple maintenance needs. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to communicate professionally with guests, team members, leadership, vendors, and contractors. Basic computer skills and ability to learn hotel maintenance, work order, email, and other business systems. High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Applicable trade licenses, certifications, or specialized training are a plus and may be required based on property needs or local regulations. Valid driver's license may be required based on the needs of the property. Ability to work a flexible schedule based on business needs, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as applicable. Hospitality Expectations Our hotels operate seven (7) days a week, twenty-four (24) hours a day. All associates are expected to support a professional, welcoming, and service-focused environment at all times. Scheduling and responsibilities may vary based on business and operational needs. Because maintenance needs can occur at any time, Hotel Maintenance Engineers may be required to work a variety of shifts or respond to urgent maintenance situations based on property needs.
