Deputy Communications Director

The AI Policy Network (AIPN) is a bipartisan, independent 501(c)(4) advocacy organization dedicated to advancing secure AI development that serves America's economic prosperity, technological leadership, and national security. The role AIPN is hiring a Deputy Communications Director to help lead a growing communications team. You will work directly with the Communications Director on strategy and message, run the production of AIPN's written and digital output, and keep a productive team's work on schedule. The specific roles on this team may flex depending on the strengths of the person in this role and the person serving as the Press Secretary. You may take on more direct press work, more owned-channel work, or more principal-facing strategy. Location: Washington, D.C. (hybrid) Compensation: $110,000 – $130,000 Reports to: Communications Director Responsibilities Strategy and message Develop communications strategy and messaging with the Communications Director Write and edit op-eds, talking points, briefing memos, and long-form materials for principals Run the communications team's day-to-day operations, helping to execute the long-term strategy set by executive leadership and the Communications Director Production and project management Run the team's editorial calendar; track deadlines and deliverables across press, digital, and events Coordinate report launches, polling releases, and other multi-day rollouts Edit the team's output for quality and consistency of voice Owned channels Oversee AIPN's social media presence and content calendar Maintain consistent messaging across web, email, and social Supervise contractors and junior staff as the team grows Press (in coordination with the Press Secretary) Contribute to press strategy, rapid response, and principal prep Cultivate reporter relationships where they complement the Press Secretary's Required qualifications 5–8+ years of communications experience in political, advocacy, government, or campaign settings Strong writing and editing under deadline; ability to edit others' work, not just your own Experience running a comms product or campaign end to end Demonstrated ability to work across the political spectrum Based in the D.C. area; available to commute to meetings and events in D.C. or our Capitol Hill office Preferred qualifications Experience leading or co-leading a communications shop Relationships with technology or national security journalists Staff supervision or vendor management experience Familiarity with social platforms and content management systems Background in AI or national security policy Benefits Technology budget, stipend for health insurance, and unlimited PTO.
