Blocker and Bracer Leader

About the Position: The Blocker and Bracer Leader leads a crew of workers while actively fabricating custom timber supports, rigging, and securing heavy cargo and munitions for safe transport. In addition to hands-on trade duties, the position assigns tasks, ensures safety and regulatory compliance, and coordinates materials and workflow across carriers such as trucks, railcars, and ships. Pass on to other workers’ instructions received from supervisor and start work by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed to individual members of the group led. Secure freight in trucks, trailers, railroad cars, or ships to prevent damage during shipment. Ensure that needed plans, blueprints, material, and tools are available and that needed stocks are obtained from supply locations. Provide information to supervisor on status and progress of work, causes of delays, and overall work operations and problems. Assure that equipment capacities are not exceeded and that tools are properly used. Fabricate wooden supporting and bracing fixtures and fasten them and items of freight in place. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Blocker and Bracer Leader without more than normal supervision. I can give directions to a number of employees in accomplishing task such as blocking and bracing equipment on truck trailers using blocks, braces, or other staying devices. . I use judgment in insuring that individual parts, structures, and devices will prevent cargo movement and damage, considering the type, weight, and placement of the load. • Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Includes Blueprint Reading) Ability to Lead or Supervise Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, and Repair, etc. Knowledge of Materials Technical Practices (Theoretical, Precise, Artistic) PHYSICAL EFFORTS Average weight handled is approximately 45 pounds; however, occasionally will handle items weighing up to 65 pounds unassisted. Materials handling equipment, such as dollies, hand trucks, conveyors, high-lift trucks, etc., are available and used where ever practicable. Work pace may be rapid for long periods of time and heavy exertion is required at frequent intervals. Work situation may require constant sitting, kneeling, crouching, stooping, or climbing in strained or awkward positions. WORKING CONDITIONS Work site will usually be in railroad cars, trailer, or magazines, under conditions of poor ventilation and inadequate light and is frequently exposed to disagreeable heat, coldness, dampness, wind and rail. Frequently is exposed to noise and to possible cuts, abrasions, and splinters from power sawing, handling lumber, spiking, nailing, and other work. Is exposed to nose and lung irritation from dust and sawdust and possible injuries from falling objects, swinging crane loads, etc. May wear protective eyeglasses, a face shield, protective ear devices, gloves, hard hats, hard toe shoes, or other protective equipment. Will be subject to general explosion hazard for the majority of the time and may also be subject to TNT or Tetryl-Poison hazard, toxic fumes, and other conditions found in explosives handling.
