Software Engineer

About the Role Over the past year we successfully migrated off of our legacy CMS system, and have a new modern publishing platform based on Node.js, PostgreSQL, and React. The main site handles about a million users per day and we do our own OPS in house powered by Docker and AWS. The infrastructure handles hundreds of requests per second, all while sharing the same codebases on both the server and client. The Opportunity Were looking for engineers with a strong passion for building usable, high-performance websites and applications and who are interested in working with the latest browser and mobile capabilities. As an engineer joining this team youll get to work on problems at the cutting edge of publishing. We are a team of technology generalists and we all work on any part of the stack at any given time in short iterations. Youll work closely with Product, Design, QA, DevOps to build premium products that deliver value to the business and give our readers even more reason to love The Daily Beast. Responsibilities Maintain and continuously improve multiple code bases at the same time Collaborate with other teams in the company to build products with the proper intent Work in a continuous delivery cycle and write code that can be shipped quickly Work with the other engineers to overcome challenges through pair programming and TDD Help develop simple, scalable architecture to build features upon 3 or more years of experience working with a modern javascript tech stack Familiarity with Single Page Applications using React and Webpack Experience scaling Node.js applications to handle intense and unpredictable loads Strong communication skills and ability to explain technical tradeoffs to less technical colleagues Up-to-date knowledge of tools and practices for building a well-performing modern website A personal practice of creating testable, well architected, reusable code A passion for great user experiences and a desire to work with a team that makes this a priority Desire to learn new skills and experiment with cutting edge technologies Nice-to-haves Desire to learn and work with GraphQL Interest in working with React Native Experience with Flexbox Experience with Docker orchestration Advanced knowledge PostgreSQL and writing efficient queries Well versed in AWS and the breadth of services offered Familiarity with serverless architecture The Daily Beast is a globally recognized publication at IAC HQ in pristine Chelsea in New York City.
