This position is located in the Office of Import Surveillance. The Office is responsible for identifying and screening foreign made products being imported into the U.S. to insure they meet mandatory safety standards and regulations, educate industry regarding mandatory standards and certain safety-related voluntary standards, and follow up with importers and distributors to determine whether a product recall is warranted. This position is on the front-line at U.S. ports with other federal agencies playing a crucial role in protecting America's families from unsafe consumer products. The Office is primarily comprised of Compliance Investigators who spend a substantial amount of their time at port locations across the country. Duties include: Serving in a multi-faceted investigative role which includes on-site import surveillance; conducting follow-up investigation of importing firms to determine the extent and magnitude of a firm's importation of hazardous products; Working to enhance CPSC's relationship with local port officials, brokers, and industry by providing expert advice and training regarding CPSC regulations and enforcement issues; and Managing individual case investigation and personally conduct nationwide investigations involving suspect importers, based on information developed at the local ports. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Knowledge of trade community practices and import requirements and the particular skills and abilities to successfully conduct complex investigations, including but not limited to collecting, organizing and analyzing data, writing reports and conducting oral presentations. Evidence of the above specialized experience must be supported by detailed documentation of duties performed in positions held. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. The locality pay you receive will be determined by your duty station: CPSC Headquarters (Washington, D.C.) or port address if located outside the D.C. locality pay area. This position does not have a mandatory education requirement. There is no substitution for specialized experience at this grade level.
