# Supervisory Recreation Specialist (Aquatics Operations Manager)

About the position: This position is Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) and will be assigned to the 673 FSS Buckner Fitness Center Pool on JBER, AK. Regular Full-Time employees have a regular and continuous work schedule of at least 35 hours to a maximum of 40 hours per week. Assists the Aquatics Director in the planning, organizing, and management of Lifeguard staff in assigned aquatic facility(s). Performs 1st level supervisory duty for Lifeguard staff assigned to the aquatics program(s) and serves as the primary point of contact for Lifeguard personnel actions. Continuously coordinates with NAF HRO to ensure timely solicitation for vacant Lifeguard position(s); attends recruitment events and coordinates with marketing to maximize advertisement of open positions. Promptly reviews/returns applicant lists, conducts interviews, and makes selections. Maintains communication with NAF HRO on the onboarding status of selected applicants and provides routine updates to the Aquatics/Fitness Center Director on hiring timelines. Plans and carries out the training and development for Lifeguard staff; conducts initial orientation and routine in-service training at assigned facilities. As primary Lifeguard Instructor provides continuing education/certification in Lifeguarding, First Aid/CPR/AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens for all newly onboarded Lifeguards within 30 days of onboarding. Assists the Aquatics Director with APF and NAF budget preparation and adherence. Maintains supply inventory for assigned aquatic facility(s) and submits purchase recommendations/requests to Aquatics Director. Assigns, directs and reviews the work of subordinate employees and evaluates work performance
• provides initial feedback to staff within 30 days of hire, and midterm/annual appraisals within allotted timeframes established by NAF HRO/Aquatics Director. Recommends disciplinary actions, plans schedules to ensure adequate Lifeguard coverage at assigned facility(s), coordinates work operations, and explains management policies. Works to achieve the objectives of personnel programs/policies and deals effectively with employees on complaints, grievances, and other matters involved in the day-to-day administration of the aquatics program. Provides employees advice and guidance on proper methods/techniques and ensures staff follow all applicable processes and procedures. Works in swimming pool environment where Lifeguards are present to perform lifesaving activity. Ensures water quality testing is performed in accordance with DAFMAN 48-143 and the CDC Model Aquatic Health Code; reports deficiencies to the Aquatics Director and the Fitness Center Director. Inspects pool(s) and equipment to ensure they are operated in a safe manner and as instructed. Ensures that all staff continuously observe the swimming area to ensure the safety of patrons and the prevention of injuries. Ensures the swimming area is open to patrons at scheduled times and only authorized persons are admitted to the area. Instructs patrons on rules and procedures for safe swimming. Rescues swimmers in trouble, promptly administers first aid, and calls for medical assistance if and when needed. Performs other related duties as assigned. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if the position allows for qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Qualifying Experience: Must have at least 1 year experience in pool operations and working knowledge of aquatic facility rules, procedures, and equipment. Must demonstrate skill in planning, organizing, coordinating, and/or evaluating aquatics programs. Must possesses an approved and current nationally recognized certification in Lifeguard Instruction, Lifeguarding, Bloodborne Pathogen Training and First Aid/CPR/AED or obtain these certifications within 60 days of hire. Must have experience which provides a practical knowledge of swimming activities, rules and procedures and skill in the use and maintenance of various pool and safety equipment is desirable. Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing.
