This position will serve as a Supervisory Police Officer at the Prescott VA Medical Center in Prescott,AZ , ensuring a safe and secure environment across all VA Administrations with various settings, including a variety of jurisdictional environments. In this capacity, you will direct, coordinate and perform supervisory and non-supervisory policing law enforcement assignments and projects.
Major Duties: Provides leadership and guidance to subordinate supervisors and managers in implementing policies, procedures, and directives of senior management. Oversees and evaluates supervisory practices to ensure consistency, equity, and compliance across the organization. Reviews and approves recommendations for selections, promotions, details, and reassignments, ensuring alignment with mission requirements and workforce planning objectives. Establishes and interprets performance standards for organizational units and ensures subordinate supervisors effectively communicate expectations and provide feedback to their teams. Evaluates the performance of subordinate supervisors and ensures fair and consistent application of rating techniques throughout the division. Approves or recommends awards and pay actions within delegated authority. Addresses complex employee relations issues elevated by subordinate supervisors and refers unresolved matters to higher management when necessary. Provides direction on corrective actions for performance or conduct issues and reviews proposed disciplinary measures for appropriateness and compliance. Identifies organizational training needs and ensures supervisors facilitate employee development opportunities to maintain and enhance workforce capabilities. Approves leave policies and schedules at the organizational level to ensure adequate coverage during peak workloads and holiday periods. Enforces all federal, state, and local laws pertaining to violations on government property and federally controlled assets. Preserves the peace, prevents crimes, arrests offenders, and provides police assistance during emergency and/or life-threatening situations. Pursues and apprehends persons fleeing a crime scene or attempting to resist arrest. Engages in the hot pursuit of a fleeing felon and may leave jurisdictional boundaries to conduct investigations. Apprehends wanted persons who are accused of crimes in other jurisdictions; stops, questions, and detains such persons and notifies the appropriate law enforcement or judicial agencies. Conducts investigations; requires and receives information relating to criminal offenses; serves and executes search and arrest warrants; serves subpoenas and summonses; administers oaths; makes arrests without warrant; takes actions to preserve the peace while protecting the federal government facilities and personnel; bears firearms and performs other activities in accordance with Title 38, United States Code, Sections 901 and 902. Serves as a member of a Crisis Intervention Team, responding to and recognizing Veterans experiencing mental health crisis, utilizing advanced de-escalation strategies and knowledge of VA resources to ensure the best possible outcome for our nation's Veterans. Liaisons with other federal, state, and local public safety agencies to conduct training and communication networks to increase the effectiveness of Veteran Centric Policing models. Conducts inspections of federal VA facilities and worksites for compliance with VA physical security requirements. Performs inspections of physical security countermeasures to include electronic access control systems, CCTV Systems, Intrusion Alarms, Duress Alarms, and other systems. Assists with Vulnerability Assessments, as well as Physical Security Surveys. Analyzes problems, determines deficiencies, finalizes inspection results to include draft, review, editing, and evaluation, and takes corrective action. Prepares a report of findings, providing detailed conclusions and recommendations for program deficiencies, improvements, corrections of irregularities, and rectification of injustices revealed by inspections. Performs other duties as assigned. Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. Work Schedule: Compressed/Flexible Schedule. Candidates must be willing to work weekends, irregular work hours and extended hours if determined by the needs of the service. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/06/2026. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-09 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-08. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-08 (or equivalent pay band) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization that provided a knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: supervising/leading and providing guidance/direction to law enforcement personnel at various levels on duties in response to potential threats of violence, detecting criminal activity, fire and other emergencies; enforcing federal, state, and local laws; coordinates or oversees off-station law enforcement activities, investigations or protection support; performs various administrative functions to include reviewing and overseeing daily and monthly police activity, crime and accident reports and plans, incoming correspondence, monitoring budget and/or budget requests, managing/overseeing personnel activity, etc.; may have served as Officer-In-Charge within a police department. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. Experience as a security guard or corrections officer is generally not qualifying. Note: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hour worked per week. You must provide detailed information of your experience performed. Physical Requirements: The work requires, on a regular and recurring basis, considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as running, frequent climbing of multiple flights of stairs, and carrying items weighing over 50 pounds. Driver's License Requirement: Applicants must possess a valid, unrestricted State driver's license, have a safe driving record, and demonstrate that he or she is medically qualified to operate the appropriate motor vehicle safely. Firearm Requirement: VA Police Officers are required to carry agency-approved firearms while on duty on VA property. Work Conditions: The work involves both moderate and high risks and possible endangerment of life or serious injury that requires the exercise of safety precautions and use of personal protective equipment The work is performed in settings in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate to severe discomforts and unpleasantness, such as high temperatures in confined spaces, high temperatures due to mandatory protective personal equipment, or adverse weather conditions during extended periods of traffic and patrol duties.
