Pipefitter Supervisor

This position functions as the Chief of the Plumbing Shop within Engineering Service at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center and is responsible for planning, laying out, and repairing all plumbing and steam fitting installation on the station and at the four (4) remote community-based clinics. Duties include but are not limited to: Planning: The incumbent is responsible for the quantity and quality of work done within the Plumbing Shop. Under the general direction his/her supervisor, the incumbent plans work schedules, assigns priorities to work orders within the shop, lays out the more complex jobs, and reviews the work while it is in progress to assure that a satisfactory job is being done. The Pipefitter Supervisor determines amounts and types of materials and equipment needed to do the work and initiates requisitions to obtain them. Work Direction: The incumbent is responsible for the first line supervisory duties within the Plumbing Shop. These duties include: Planning the use of subordinate workers, equipment, facilities, materials on a month-to-month basis; establishing deadlines, priorities, and work sequences, and planning work assignments based on general work schedules, methods, and policies set by higher level supervisors; coordinating work with related Engineering work functions controlled by other supervisors; determining the number and types of workers needed to accomplish specific projects; redirecting individual workers and resources to accomplish unanticipated work; informing his/her supervisor of the need to revise work schedules and re-estimate labor and other resources; and participating with the his/her supervisor in the initial planning of current and future work schedules, budget requests, staffing needs, estimates, and recommendations as to scheduling projected work. The Pipefitter Supervisor has full range of supervisory responsibility for the efficient operation of the plumbing shop and for the accomplishment of work orders or directions received from his/her supervisor or designee. Administration: Investigating work-related problems, such as excessive costs or low productivity, and determining their causes; implementing appropriate corrective actions to resolve work problems; and recommending solutions to staffing problems, engineering requirements, and work directed by other supervisors. Planning and establishing the overall leave schedule for the Shop; acting as approving official for leave requests, setting performance standards and conducting performance appraisals, conducting competency evaluations, recommending, and arranging for needed training, initiating disciplinary actions, as needed, and actively promoting management programs, such as cost reduction, incentive awards, and safety, and equal employment opportunity. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Considerable walking, stooping, bending, crawling, standing and climbing is required in performance of duties. Incumbent is required to lift/ carry moderately heavy loads of 40-80 pounds.Works from ladders, scaffolds, staging, as well as working in confined spaces. Works both indoors and outdoors, in all types of weather conditions. Work areas include isolation wards/rooms, in sub-ceilings, pits, crawl spaces, and tunnels, etc. Safety precautions are to be observed at alt times. Protective clothing and equipment is to be used.
