Automotive Mechanic (Automotive Marine Mechanic)

The Smithsonian Institution is the world's largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in one of the SI facilities serviced by the Office of Facilities Management (FM), Smithsonian Institution (SI). The Office of Facilities Management is responsible for all Smithsonian facilities, many of which are designated as historic and all of which are visited by millions of people each year. The Automotive (Marine) Mechanic maintains and repairs automotive and marine-based motorized equipment that includes automobiles, boats, trailers, and miscellaneous off-highway equipment that belong to the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) motor fleet. In this position, you will: Repair vehicles and boats involving components such as engines, transmissions, drive assemblies, and differentials. Use a wide variety of test equipment, such as test panels, dynamometers, oscilloscopes, exhaust analyzers, and visual and listening devices, to help troubleshoot (trace and locate) defects and determine the type and extent of repairs needed. assist with the day-to-day management of the on-site fueling site. Conduct planning, repair, maintenance, troubleshooting, and service of electrical charging infrastructure using skills and tools that range from computer diagnostics to basic electrical tools. Assists both management and the Office of Risk Management in resolving vehicle and boat accidents. Conditions of Employment Physical Requirements: This position requires the physical ability to perform moderately heavy work including lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 50 lbs.; work outside in all weather conditions with exposure to dirt, dust, pollen and insects; climb ladders and stairs; and stand and walk for extended periods.
