About the Position: You will serve as the technical authority on complex geology and hydrogeology for Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste (HTRW) projects for the Kansas City District Civil Works and Military projects, leading in-house and contracted teams in site investigations, designs remedial solutions, and directing project workflows and providing vital technical consultation and solutions to stakeholders.
Leading and guiding personnel in Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste (HTRW) site investigations and remedial designs. Oversees and manages technical activities for in-house and contracted studies, reports, and construction plans.
Serving as the technical authority on geology and hydrogeology for HTRW projects. Develops solutions for complex problems, designs site features, applies new techniques, and prepares project specifications and drawings.
Directing work assignments and problem-solving strategies for the team. Mentors junior geologists and monitors work progress. Presents team findings to stakeholders, program officials, and the public.
Preparing and coordinating contract scopes of work. Monitors contractor performance for compliance with requirements and quality standards. Performs quality assurance oversight to ensure effective quality control.
Providing authoritative guidance in geology and hydrogeology to internal staff and external stakeholders. Builds and maintains strong collaborative relationships to ensure information sharing and standards compliance.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for a Geologist: A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. (Note: Acceptable experience may have been gained through geological field or laboratory work that provided a means of obtaining professional knowledge of the theory and application of the principles of geology and closely related sciences, e.g., geophysics, geochemistry, or hydrology. Such work generally must have involved making close observations, taking samples, handling various types of instruments and equipment, assembling geologic data from source materials, and analyzing and reporting findings orally and in writing. In some situations, professional scientific experience in other fields may be accepted in part as professional geological experience. Such experience must have been preceded by appropriate education in geology or by professional geological experience, and must have contributed directly and significantly to the applicant's professional geological competence. To receive credit for geological experience obtained in positions that are not full-time professional geological positions, the applicant is responsible for indicating clearly the actual time or percentage of time devoted to geologic duties within such positions, and for giving adequate descriptions of the geologic functions.) In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1.) Conducting routine Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste (HTRW) geological site investigations and groundwater monitoring; 3.) Performing standard hydrogeological modeling and geologic mapping to support environmental cleanup and remedial designs; 3.) Drafting scopes of work and performed quality assurance reviews on contractor-submitted technical geological reports; and 4.) Collaborating with multi-disciplinary engineering teams and regulators on environmental compliance and data collection. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
