Project Manager - HVAC

Stanger Industries Inc.

STANGER INDUSTRIES Job Description Project Manager – HVAC Department: HVAC – Construction & Service Location: Kansas City Metro Employment type: Full-time, exempt Company Background and Position Summary Stanger Industries is a family-owned commercial mechanical contracting company that has served the Greater Kansas City market for over 44 years delivering commercial HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical solutions. Stanger Industries' core values center on three words: character, quality, and relationships. The Stanger Industries operating philosophy is focused on choosing “the right way over the easy way” and emphasizes that honesty and integrity are vital to every customer and partner relationship. The culture is distinctly team-oriented and mentorship-driven. Those values are rooted in the owners' Christian faith, which is the foundation of how the company is run and how decisions get made. It shows in the way people are treated here: we keep our word, we do right by our customers and our employees, and we support our people in keeping faith, family, and work in the right order. People of all faiths and backgrounds are welcome at Stanger, and we hire on skill, experience, and character. We are seeking an experienced Project Manager to join our HVAC team. This role is dedicated to project delivery: our estimating team prices and wins the work, and you take it from handoff through buyout, execution, and closeout, delivering it on time and at or above the margin it was sold at. The right candidate is equally comfortable in the office and on the job site. You will own the budget, the schedule, and the client relationship on every project you run, planning the work alongside our foremen and keeping it moving. As our HVAC group grows, this role is central to expanding capacity and strengthening our project delivery. Key Responsibilities Project Planning & Execution • Estimate handoff and job setup: take awarded work through a formal handoff with the estimator, review the scope, estimate assumptions, and budget, and build the execution plan before work starts in the field. • Project ownership: manage assigned HVAC projects end to end, from buyout through closeout, ensuring work is delivered on schedule, on budget, and to specification. • Scheduling and labor planning: develop and maintain project schedules, and work with foremen to plan crew size and forecast manpower so the right people are on the job at the right time. • Procurement and buyout: buy out equipment, materials, and subcontracts against the estimate, and manage submittals and delivery timing to support the schedule. • Client and team communication: serve as the primary point of contact for owners, general contractors, and design teams, run project meetings, and report status clearly. • Quality and safety: ensure work meets code, specification, and Stanger quality standards, and support a safe job site in partnership with field leadership. • Closeout and turnover: manage punch lists, O&M documentation, warranty, and final billing, and hand the building off cleanly to our service team and the customer. Financial Performance • Budget and margin control: own the project budget, track costs against the estimate, and protect gross margin through proactive cost management. • Cost forecasting: prepare accurate monthly cost-to-complete forecasts and surface margin risk early enough to do something about it. • Change order management: identify changes in scope as they happen, price and document them, and secure written approval before the work is performed. • Billing and cash: submit timely, accurate pay applications, manage billing position against cost, and support collection of receivables on assigned projects. Qualifications Required • Proven track record managing projects to budget and schedule while protecting margin. • Strong working knowledge of HVAC systems, mechanical equipment, installation methods, and means and methods. • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and submittals. • Solid understanding of project financials including budgets, cost tracking, cost-to-complete forecasting, change orders, and billing. • Ability to build strong working relationships with foremen and field crews and to lead the work through them. • Excellent organization, communication, and relationship-management skills. • Proficiency with project management and scheduling software and standard office applications. • Valid driver’s license and ability to visit job sites in the Kansas City area. Preferred • 5–10 years of experience in commercial HVAC, including hands-on project management. • Field background with experience as an HVAC foreman or installer who has moved into project management is highly valued. • Familiarity with the Kansas City commercial construction market and local trade partners. • Experience with design-build or design-assist delivery. • Experience with construction job cost and project management software (ComputerEase or similar). • Relevant certifications (e.g., EPA, OSHA 30) or trade education. What Stanger Offers • A growing HVAC group with strong project backlog and clear opportunity to advance. • A collaborative team that promotes from the field and invests in its people. • Direct support from leadership and the resources to run work the right way. • A dedicated estimating team behind you, so your focus stays on running projects well. • Competitive compensation and a full benefits package (details discussed during the interview process). All qualified applicants receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. To apply, submit a resume and a brief summary of relevant HVAC project management experience.
