This Maintenance Mechanic position is located in the Facility Management department at the VA Boston Healthcare System (West Roxbury campus). Incumbent will be traveling between the West Roxbury Division and the seven Outpatient Clinics, as known as Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs). This position is a full-time at 40 hours per week. Travel to other VA campuses and Community Based Outpatient Clinics. Perform building maintenance and repair work with minimal supervision. Determine appropriate corrective actions for deficiencies identified during facility inspections. Prioritize assigned maintenance activities to meet established work requirements. Inspect building service equipment to identify maintenance deficiencies. Verify completed maintenance work meets established requirements. Examine received equipment and supplies for compliance with specified requirements. Repair mechanical components used in non-clinical building equipment. Replace defective components in electric motors and control equipment. Perform minor plumbing repairs on building utility systems. Interpret blueprints to perform building maintenance work. Apply manufacturers' technical instructions when servicing building equipment. Use operating instructions to determine maintenance requirements for non-clinical equipment. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade). Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year). Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child. Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66. Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA. Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement). Telework: Not available Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Physical Requirements: Employee must work from ladders and in cramped spaces, which require him to bend, reach and hold awkward positions for prolonged periods. Frequently lifts and moves objects up to 40 pounds and occasionally lifts and carries objects over 40 pounds either alone or with others. The incumbent is duty stationed in West Roxbury. He/she performs work at the seven Outpatient Clinics and is exposed to usual occupational hazards of his work. Must observe all standards, safety codes and perform his work in accordance with recognized trades, national codes and VA Manuals and Program Guides. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining his work area within the Engineering Service rooms and areas within his assigned area in a neat and orderly manner. The incumbent is required to wear safety equipment and clothing when appropriate and required. He/she will be traveling between the West Roxbury Division and the seven Outpatient Clinics. Notifications: This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until 12/31/2026. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be 10/22/2026, with subsequent cut-off dates bi-weekly). This position is in the Competitive Service. This position is a AFGE Bargaining Unit position. This position is covered by a special rate range for federal wage system skilled positions. The incumbent will be required to travel to other VA campuses and Community Based Outpatient Clinics. Current and former Federal employees must submit copies of their most recent SF-50, (Notice of Personnel Action). The SF-50 must identify the position title, series, grade, step, tenure and type of service (Competitive or Excepted). In some cases, more than one SF-50 may be required to show a higher grade previously held.
