Facilities Engineering Lead

Peak Energy

Facilities Engineering Lead  Location: Burlingame, CA initially. This role will permanently transition to our Sacramento manufacturing facility by Q1 2027. Candidates must be willing and able to relocate to the Sacramento area.  Department: Manufacturing Operations / Plant Facilities  Reports to: Head of Facilities  Position Type: Full-Time, Exempt  About the Company  Peak Energy is the first American venture to advance globally proven sodium-ion battery systems as the storage standard for the new era of renewable energy on a resilient grid.  Sodium-ion is cheap, readily available, and safe — making it the leading contender in a rapidly evolving market.  Our leadership team is powered by decades of expertise in scaling gigawatt-level innovation at world-class companies such as Tesla, Northvolt, SunPower, Fluence, and Enovix. We are backed by strategic investment and product partners including TDK Ventures and Eclipse Ventures.  We are a team of engineers, operators, entrepreneurs, and partners driven by a shared ambition to set the new performance standard for renewable energy and grid resilience.  About the Job  Peak Energy is looking for a hands-on Facilities Engineering Lead to own facility operations and construction coordination at our battery energy storage system (BESS) manufacturing facility.  This is a working-lead role responsible for keeping the physical plant — including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, life-safety, and process-support systems — safe, compliant, reliable, and operating at the level our production lines depend on.  You’ll be on the floor diagnosing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and supporting installation and repair of facility systems while also managing contractors, capital projects, and facility documentation. As the site scales, you’ll help build and lead a small team of Facilities Technicians.  Responsibilities  Own the day-to-day operation, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of facility systems, including HVAC and process cooling, electrical distribution, compressed air, plumbing/process piping, and building automation/controls.  Perform and oversee hands-on installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems throughout the facility.  Keep the building envelope, dock doors, cranes/hoists, and material-handling infrastructure supporting production operations in good working order.  Build, develop, and lead a team of approximately 1–3 Facilities Technicians as the site scales, including scheduling, mentoring, and supporting ongoing technical development.  Source, qualify, and manage outside contractors and vendors across electrical, mechanical, fire/life-safety, pest control, janitorial, grounds, and waste/recycling services, including scoping, quoting, scheduling, and invoice review.  Plan and execute facility construction and capital projects, including line expansions, utility upgrades, tenant improvements, equipment installations, and infrastructure improvements.  Manage project scope, schedule, budget, and contractor coordination in partnership with manufacturing/process engineering, EHS, outside architects, engineers, and contractors.  Review and mark up facility drawings in Bluebeam and coordinate redlines, as-builts, and other technical documentation with contractors and engineers.  Coordinate with contractors, Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), and utilities on inspections, permitting, and facility-related compliance requirements.  Maintain accurate facility documentation, including as-built drawings, preventive maintenance schedules, equipment logs, and related records.  Operate forklifts and mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) as needed to support facility installations and maintenance activities.  Serve as the primary on-call escalation point for after-hours facility issues.  Own the facilities operating and capital budgets and track spend against forecast.  Identify and implement energy-efficiency, reliability, and sustainability improvements across facility operations.  Minimum Qualifications  5+ years of progressive, hands-on experience in industrial facilities maintenance, operations, engineering, or MEP systems within a manufacturing, industrial, or heavy-processing environment. Experience in battery, electronics, chemical processing, automotive, or similarly regulated or utility-intensive manufacturing is a strong plus.  Equivalent experience counts — time served through a trade apprenticeship, military technical training, or progressively responsible maintenance/facilities roles is weighed the same as a formal degree.  Demonstrated hands-on experience installing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing MEP systems in an industrial or manufacturing environment.  Construction or facility project management experience, including managing contractors, project scope, schedules, and budgets.  Working knowledge of industrial electrical systems and wiring methods, including the National Electrical Code (NEC) and electrical distribution up to 480V; medium-voltage exposure is a plus.  Working knowledge of HVAC/process cooling, compressed air, plumbing, and process piping systems.  Working knowledge of applicable workplace safety, electrical safety, and environmental requirements, including OSHA and NFPA 70E; familiarity with EPA and California-specific requirements is a plus.  Able to read and work from facility drawings and schematics, including electrical one-lines, mechanical P&IDs, and floor plans.  Prior experience leading, scheduling, or mentoring maintenance/facilities technicians, or clear readiness to step into that responsibility.  Comfortable with CMMS platforms, basic budgeting, and vendor/contract management.  Strong troubleshooting instincts and willingness to personally perform hands-on installation, diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs alongside technicians and contractors as needed — this is a working-lead role, not a purely administrative position.  Able to respond to after-hours emergencies and support occasional weekend or off-shift work for planned shutdowns, installations, or projects.  Strong interpersonal and people-management skills, with the ability to lead, motivate, and develop a technician team.  Preferred Qualifications  Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in facilities management, industrial, mechanical, or electrical engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.  Journeyman electrician license, HVAC/EPA 608 certification, or equivalent relevant trade license or certification.  Current forklift and/or MEWP certification, or ability to obtain required certification.  AutoCAD proficiency.  Experience supporting facility buildouts, equipment commissioning, production-line installations, or manufacturing facility startup/ramp.  Experience working with AHJs, utilities, contractors, and engineering partners through permitting, inspection, commissioning, and facility startup activities.  Proficiency with Bluebeam for reviewing and marking up facility and construction drawings.  Work Environment & Physical Requirements  Primarily an active manufacturing-floor environment with exposure to noise, temperature variation, and industrial equipment; PPE is required in designated areas.  Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and to stand, walk, climb, and work in tight or elevated spaces across the facility for extended periods.  Will work in proximity to high-voltage equipment and battery chemicals under established safety protocols and with appropriate training and PPE.  Must be available to respond on short notice to facility emergencies outside normal business hours.  Compensation and Benefits  The salary range for this role is between $130,000- $160,000 year, with actual pay varying based on work location, experience, and skills. Our competitive benefits package includes:  Flexible time off Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage Strong 401(k) plan Equity opportunities Many great work perks  Join us to thrive in a supportive environment while making a meaningful impact in the energy sector.  At Peak Energy Technologies Inc., we believe that a diverse and inclusive workplace makes us a more capable, innovative, and competitive company. We welcome people who represent diversity in their backgrounds, ethnicities, cultures, and experiences. Peak Energy Technologies Inc. is an equal opportunity employer, aiming to reach our company’s full potential by cultivating an inclusive workforce. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, ancestry, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, citizenship, marital or family status, disability, gender identity or expression, veteran status, or any other legally protected status.
