hussh 🤫
https://careers.hushh.ai/open-roles/full-stack-engineer-ai-first Company Description hussh 🤫 builds private AI that is owned and controlled by the individual, not by the company or advertisers. The product combines "One Agent," a set of lifelong AI helpers that securely manage personal documents, communications, and everyday tasks, with "One Puppy," a dedicated home device that runs these agents locally to keep data under the user's roof. The company was founded after a personal experience with identity theft, driving a mission to ensure people always know who is accessing their information and can decide what is shared. hussh 🤫 aims to make AI genuinely useful at scale while preserving personal control, privacy, and transparency. The core belief is that AI agents should be truly yours to own. Software Engineer (AI
• systems
• data
• UX-first) Rockstar software engineers who are AI-, systems-, data-, and user-experience-first
• all at once. About the role: You build the product people actually touch, across the whole stack, on a team small enough that the thing you ship on Tuesday is in front of users by Friday. This is AI-first work in the literal sense: the agent runtime, the data underneath it, and the interface on top are one problem, and you will work on all three rather than being handed a slice. What you'll do: Build Agent One features end to end
• from data and agent runtime to a UX that feels inevitable Make AI a first-class material: tools, memory, evals, and the consent layer underneath Design data systems that are fast, private, and correct
• receipts, least privilege, minimal disclosure Obsess over latency, accuracy, and control; instrument outcomes so we don't fool ourselves Write small, modular, legible code others could lift on its own What we need to see: You have shipped and owned production full-stack work, front to back, for real users Hands-on LLM and agent work: tool use, context handling, and the evals that keep it honest Taste in interface, not just capability: you can tell when something is technically correct and still bad You debug across boundaries rather than escalating at the edge of your usual layer Nice to have: On-device or edge inference experience, since much of our compute is on hardware the user owns You have worked somewhere with a real privacy or consent constraint, not just a policy page Open-source work anyone can read What winning looks like: Features shipped that move activation and weekly-active retention Latency, accuracy, and quality budgets met Code others reuse; low defect and regression rate Where and how we work We work in the office together five days a week, in one of our garages. Remote work is available only by exception, arranged individually around specific circumstances. Role Description This is a full-time, on-site Software Engineer role based in Chicago, IL. The Software Engineer will design, develop, and maintain end-to-end software solutions that power both the AI agent experience and the home "Puppy" device. Daily responsibilities include building and integrating front-end interfaces with back-end services, implementing secure APIs, optimizing performance, and ensuring a seamless user experience across web and device environments. The role involves collaborating closely with product, design, and AI engineering teams to translate privacy-first requirements into robust, scalable technical solutions. The engineer will also participate in code reviews, testing, deployment, and continuous improvement of the overall system architecture. Qualifications
• Strong Full-Stack Development and Software Development skills, with experience building production-quality applications end to end.
• Proficiency in Back-End Web Development, including designing and implementing APIs, data models, and scalable services.
• Experience in Front-End Development, including modern JavaScript frameworks and solid understanding of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).
• Solid understanding of security, privacy-by-design principles, and best practices for protecting user data.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure or on-premise systems, containerization, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a small, fast-paced team, including clear communication and ownership of projects.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• Interest in privacy, security, and building user-centric AI products; experience with AI or distributed systems is a plus. Before you apply — one requirement. Use the app. Go to hushh.ai, create your Private Agent One, and use it until you understand it: what it does, why it matters, and the value proposition — your information belongs to you, your agent works only for you, and nothing moves without your consent. Then apply, and in the application tell us what you understood. Applications from people who have not used the app are not reviewed.
