This is the job Our client is one of the world's best-known technology companies, working on modelling complex industrial systems. The team is building statistical models of how individual machines behave, with the goal of linking those models together to optimise an entire system. You will sit at the point where two disciplines meet: mathematical optimisation and modern AI. You will build models of real physical processes from sensor data, and connect LLM agents to deterministic engineering tools — solvers and simulations — so those models can be used to make decisions. This is a long-term contract engagement, remote, full time, with one to two hours of daily overlap with US Pacific time. This is you A degree or equivalent experience in a STEM field — operations research, applied mathematics, industrial, chemical or process engineering Strong professional experience in Python (C/C++ also welcome) Hands-on mathematical optimisation: linear and mixed-integer programming, with solvers such as Gurobi, CPLEX, OR-Tools or Pyomo Practical experience with LLMs, and with building or integrating AI agents You have connected, or can clearly show how you would connect, an LLM workflow to deterministic tools such as a solver or a simulation Experience modelling physical or industrial systems — building in-silico models, or statistical models from sensor data You can take a complex physical process and turn it into a mathematical or computational model Strong software development skills: you write production code, not only prototypes English at advanced level Nice-to-have skills Machine learning, operations research or high-performance computing frameworks and libraries Deep knowledge of stochastic modelling or combinatorial optimisation Familiarity with Vertex AI, OpenAI Platform or Anthropic Console Bayesian optimisation and stochastic processes Simulation techniques — discrete event simulation, agent-based modelling or Markov chain modelling Experience in manufacturing, chemical, energy or process industries This is your role Develop statistical models of industrial systems from sensor data and experimentation Build models of individual machine behaviour, and work towards linking them into a system-level model Propose and implement optimisation approaches for real industrial problems, including stochastic methods Connect LLM agents to deterministic tools so models can be used in operational decision-making Design, validate and evaluate the models you build, and take them through to production Work closely with an international engineering team What awaits you at Avenga?
